Joeseph Pippen - Why use a Statement of Faith in a Christian will?

A statement of faith is a preamble in a will that allows the deceased to share his beliefs with family and friends. The purpose of this personal statement of faith is to comfort loved ones in their time of loss and to encourage them to share this same belief.

Three examples of a Christian statement of faith are as follows:

  1. I, JOHN SMITH, a resident of Pinellas County, Florida, being of sound mind and disposing memory, realizing the uncertainty of this life and with full confidence and trust in my Lord and Savior, JESUS CHRIST, in His death on the cross and shed blood as an atonement for my sins, and knowing by faith in His sacrifice on the cross for me that I have eternal life, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking any and all other Wills and Codicils heretofore made by me.

  2. I, JOHN SMITH, a resident of Pinellas County, Florida, being of sound and disposing mind and memory and being under no restraint, do make, declare and publish this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all Wills and Codicils hereto made by me.First, realizing the uncertainty of this life, I place full confidence and trust in my Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST, who promised: “I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in ME, though he were dead yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die” (John 11:25-26).

Second, knowing that the wages of sin is death, I believe that JESUS CHRIST, the only Son of God, suffered and died for the forgiveness of all my sins, which I neither deserve nor merit, but receive as a free gift of God, who is rich in grace and mercy.

Third, I urge my heirs not to set their hopes on uncertain riches, but to take hold of the life which is life indeed through faith in JESUS CHRIST.

  3. I, JOHN SMITH, a resident of Pinellas County, Florida, being of sound and disposing mind and memory and being under no restraint, do make, declare and publish this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all Wills and Codicils heretofore made by me.

First, I commit myself to God’s care, secure in His love for me and trusting in the salvation purchased for me through CHRIST’S suffering and death. I leave those who survive me the comfort of knowing that I have died in this faith and have now joined my Lord in eternal glory.

Second, I commend my loved ones to the protecting arm of God, knowing that He will continue to provide for them despite my absence; and I encourage them to place their faith and trust in Him alone.

The following is a statement of faith from the will of Patrick Henry:

“I have now disposed of all my property to my family. There is one thing more I wish I could give them, and that is faith in Jesus Christ. If they had that and I had not given them one shilling, they would be rich; and if I had not given them that, and I had given them all the world, they would be poor indeed.”

Many Christians divide their estate:

  • 90% to their Family
  • 10% to Churches and Charities
  • Add Your Church.
